THURSDAY THREADS – VINTAGE STYLE ADVICE

It is a bit of a vintage love affair on the blog this week, after Tuesday’s gorgeous 1930’s styled bride I wanted to share my Vintage style advice for Bijou brides who want to recreate a vintage look for their wedding day.

SHOP TIL YOU DROP

Just like bride Christina earlier this week you may have a passion for a particular decade that will dominate your bridal style and perhaps your wedding theme.  If so you will want your wedding day look to be authentic from head to toe.  Sourcing vintage clothing and accessories will be time consuming and at times upsetting, so be prepared.  If you’re a Bijou bride that likes a bargain try Ebay and your local second hand shops.  In London I head to Angel’s Camden Passage to get my vintage fix and in New York I can spend hours on Bleecker Street.  If you don’t want to put in the legwork there are plenty of Vintage Wedding Dress companies who will and whose boutiques allow you to still have that girly wedding dress shopping experience.  Most specialists will help source a particular style of dress so go armed with images of what you are after and any fabric specifications.  

TRY, TRY & TRY AGAIN

As with any wedding dress shopping my Vintage style advice would be to try on lots of styles.  You may love the idea of a 1920’s dropped waist flapper dress but once on that particular style could do nothing for your body shape.  Don’t worry there are lots of other options and if you need advice I’m always happy to help.

SPRUCE UP

Once you have found the perfect dress do allow adequate time for any alterations or repairs, I recommend at least 8-12 weeks or more if the dress includes beadwork.

Also budget for an expert dry cleaner who is used to dealing with delicate vintage fabrics, this can be more expensive than you think and do check that they offer insurance.  This is another reason to consult a Vintage Wedding Dress specialist as they will have already restored the gowns and will have a trusted seamstress at hand for any alterations.

SPICK & SPAN

Vintage styles are still prevalent in wedding fashion so with a little research you’ll be able to find a brand new version of your ideal dress style.  I would recommend mixing up your bridal look with something old and new by adding vintage details, perhaps a vintage brooch on your dress. 

THE BEE’S KNEES

Don’t forget the details – gloves and vintage style earrings will give the look a more genuine feel.  Research the era and find out what was popular in terms of accessories, flowers and bouquet shapes.
