BRINGING BACK THE TIARA – NINA RAI
Tiaras once the de rigeur bridal accessory, have in recent years been replaced by headbands and slides. I think the blame lies at the door of Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and its Barbie-esque monstrosities. Anyway I digress, I want to champion the return of the tiara and today’s featured designer Nina Rai will ensure you all want one.
Having studied at that most famed home of fashion innovation – Central Saint Martins, Nina Rai went on to work in fashion, styling and make-up artistry before creating her Haute Couture Millinery label. The new showcase dealer at Grays Antiques in London Nina creates couture hats but more importantly to me, and you Bijou readers, handcrafted tiaras. The collection has been inspired by period design and the glamour of the 1920s (I’m having a bit of 20’s week!).
Note that Nina’s interest in fashion and make-up artistry hasn’t left her; being stylist, make-up artist and even photographer for the above shot. Nina explains ”I see the Tiara’s and Headpieces as investments, timeless treasures that can be kept for many years to come. My focus is always on the impeccable attention to detail and fine craftsmanship with sophistication and elegance remaining the core of my work.”
As for the materials, the tiaras are rhodium plated and worked with an ageing technique to give that beautiful antique feel. Swarovski and Austrian crystals are also distressed avoiding any dazzling bling for a vintage appearance.
I love this Dante design, bold yet pretty.
And if you really want to make a statement then this Samphire tiara is the one for you.
