DIY CHRISTMAS WREATH TUTORIAL WITH BLUE SKY FLOWERS
I don’t know about you but for me Christmas starts 1st December. I’m itching with excitement and the first thing ready to go is the decor for my front door after the lovely Liz from Blue Sky Flowers invited me to one of her festive workshops. If you’re looking to get creative in time for December’s magic then today’s DIY Christmas wreath tutorial will keep you busy this weekend. I’ve always been afraid of flower arranging but this is a lot easier than I thought, well at least it is when you’ve got an expert florist on hand to steer you in the right direction.
You’ll need:
Wire Frame
Scissors
Florist Reel Wire
Moss
Foliage & Flowers
Festive Decorations
Ribbon
Step One
Take your frame (these can be picked up on eBay quite cheaply) and start wrapping your moss around it in a clockwise direction, securing with the reel wire as you go. Don’t worry about being neat this is just the base and will all be covered with your foliage, flowers and decorations.
Step Two:
Pick and trim your foliage and flowers. You could use fresh or fake here but I recommend fresh so you have a beautiful scent perhaps mixed with faux flowers for longevity throughout December. Trim your selected stems to around 6inches in length and started layering up to find a combination that works for you. Once you have a look that works take a few stems at a time and place on your moss covered frame. Again working in a clockwise motion and securing the base of the stems on the frame with the reel wire as you go.
Step Three
Keep building until the entire frame is covered. Then it’s time to neaten up – trim the foliage with your scissors or bind more tightly with the reel wire. You can then start adding the festive flourishes like glitter sprayed pine cones, mistletoe, berries or cinnamon sticks.
Here’s me being studious.
Step Four
Once you’ve loaded up your wreath and finished trimming and tidying, cut your reel wire, twist and poke the end through the moss. Now find your top, you can then wrap ribbon here to hang from your door and finish with a pretty bow. Ta dah. This is my finished wreath and after two weeks it’s still fresh and smells yummy.
Liz’s fab two-hour workshops include a brief tour of the New Covent Garden Flower Market in all its twinkling and festive glory before hitting the crafting to learn wiring techniques, see examples of finished wreaths and the various styles that can be achieved, step-by-step demonstrations, as well as personal tuition to produce the perfect holiday wreath.. The workshops cost £45 per head and include materials, refreshments and morning pastries and of course your wreath to take home and proudly display.
